Also known as Brazilian Walnut, and sometimes sold under trademark names such
as Ironwood, Ipe is sourced from countries using sustainable forestry practices in
the rain forests of South America. Ipe trees can grow to a height of up to 150 feet
and up to 6 feet in diameter. The wood is light to dark brown, often with attractive
darker striping.
Approximately seven times harder than Cedar, it is prized for its strength and
durability. Though it can be some what difficult to work with due to its hardness, it
is available in long lengths that sand smoothly with no splintering and limited warp.
Because of its easy maintenance and ability to stand up in harsh conditions, Ipe is
a popular choice for outdoor decking.
